Wilatol (/vi.ləˈtoʊl/, Wilin: [vi.laˈtol]) is a small Wilin-speaking village in the northern reaches of Nostria. It was founded in mid-July 2024 by Kawa nai. The first buildings constructed were the founder's house and the communal storage area. However, the village has quickly grown since. Wilatol is notably further away from most settlements in Terra Nostra, the closest of which being Horse Island.

Toponymy

Wilatol's name comes from the same word in Wilin. It roughly means "place of Wilin language." The word can be broken down into two parts. The first part is wil- which is the stem of the verb meaning "to speak Wilin." This stem traces its origin back to the verb nilo "to speak." This word yields the noun nilin which is often translated to mean "language, speech." A clipping of this word's diminutive form (niwilin, meaning "little language") is where Wilin gets its name. The verb wilo, meaning "to speak Wilin", then came about through back-formation from the name Wilin.

The suffix -atol is often added to the stem of verbs to roughly mean "place of [verb]." This suffix was added to wilo to mean "place of Wilin language" during the founding of this settlement.

History

Settlement

Wilatol was founded in mid-July 2024 by Kawa nai. The idea behind its founding was inspired by Ballymena. After the founder had been warmly accepted in Ballymena and allowed to build a home there, he quickly came to love the idea of the village and its language that was foreign to him. For this reason, he set off to found a village for his own language and thus Wilatol was created.

Finding a land suitable for a Wilin village took some time, as the founder wanted to ensure that the land he settled wasn't too close to any neighboring settlements. Paradoxically, he did not want to be too far away from civilization either, so he consulted the maps to finally find the northern reaches of Nostria to be perfect for his settlement.

The first structure erected in Wilatol was the home of Kawa nai. Given the lack of storage space in the village and the need to hold on to many different materials, especially for construction, the founder constructed the Wilatol's communal storage area. Around this time, the Wilatol Spirit Tree was planted to give the village easy access to spruce wood. This tree has been very useful to the village and its continued growth, given most buildings make heavy use of spruce wood.

Wilatol had started gaining attention during this period and to make travel to this distant village easier, Kawa nai hired Kokili to connect Wilatol to the rest of the settlements and cities in Terra Nostra. For this purpose, the Great North Road was expanded north to make travel between Wilatol and other places much less cumbersome.

Growth

Wilatol saw continued growth after its initial settlement. Once the storage area was complete, construction then began on a minor castle that sits on the west side of the village, near the river.

During this period, Wilatol saw a growth in its population as well. Kokili nai joined the village and contributed to it by constructing the town houses that are capable of housing up to three people. These town houses were quickly claimed by Kokili nai themself, Kiwa, and Maliku. The stone roads in the village were also expanded to connect the different buildings to each other and make the settlement much more walkable.

It was also during this same time that the storage area was expanded by the addition of a basement. This basement has a mostly aesthetic purpose, allowing for some storage. However, the main use of the storage's basement is the auto smelter, which allows for quick smelting of various items, especially for building.

There was a short period, after these additions, where construction in the village slowed down and more resources were dedicated to furnishing the interiors of the already existing buildings. Additionally, Horse Island was founded around this time and the Great North Road was expanded to connect Wilatol to it.
