The Great Divide

The Great Divide is an imaginary demarcation line that cuts through the continent of Nostria and Meow Island. This line is said to be the boundary between the Western World and the Eastern World. It is used as a device to demonstrate the geopolitical divide between these two regions of Terra Nostra. West of the line, communities tend to develop organically and organize themselves in a very egalitarian manner, while east of the line, every single settlement is a formal Nation State with a Monarch as head of state.

Theories

Political Scientists have theorized on why Terra Nostra can be divided into two equal parts this clearly, there currently is no consensus on why this is. The most heavily accepted reason for this cultural division is that historically, the two most powerful communities (Greenhill and Chicken Island) tended to influence neighboring settlements to have similar societal structures. Or more accurately, most settlements trace their heritage back to either Greenhill or Chicken Island. So it is no surprise that new settlements would organize power the same way their previous community would. Two good examples are that of Wilatol, which was founded and populated by Greenhill residents, and Horse Island, which was founded by a member of the Chicken Island Nobility.

Criticism

There are a few lines of criticism towards the concept of a “Great Divide” amongst people in Terra Nostra.

Counterevidence

The egalitarian Goths, who make no official land-claims, have significant presence and constructions on both “sides” of the Great Divide. This fact has been raised as a criticism of the “Great Divide” concept, although it has also been argued[citation needed] that the Gothic presence on either side of the Divide serves as the “exception that proves the rule.”
